The Just-Us League are proud to announce their next anthology: Of Legend and Lore!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

New life is given to eleven old stories in this second collection of irresistible fairy tale retellings.<\/em><\/p>\n

Royalty faces magical challenges: a prince uses his powers on a rescue mission and reveals a terrible secret about his people; a king takes drastic measures to save his daughters from a troublesome curse; and a princess befriends an unusual frog.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mythical creatures can be friend or foe: three brothers face a depressed dragon with a legendary treasure; an ancient crow brings a child\u2019s wishes to life; and one young girl discovers dragons aren\u2019t always the enemy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes: a miser is in danger of losing everything one cold night; a struggling mirrorsmith me<\/em>ets an invisible recluse; a boy must relive the fairy tale based on his ancestor\u2019s life; a child is rejected because of his love of drawing cats; and an evil witch is sealed in a glass coffin.<\/em><\/p>\n

Be transported to new worlds and enjoy fresh twists on old favorites.<\/em><\/p>\n

Elise: Today, I’d like to introduce one of the authors from this exciting new volume: B.C. Marine has kindly agreed to stop by and chat. Her retelling, Seeing Through Him,\u00a0features a struggling mirrorsmith who meets an invisible recluse.\u00a0What inspired your retelling?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.:<\/strong> Invisibility was a Gift I\u2019d wanted to write a story about for a while, and <\/span>Beauty and the Beast<\/span><\/i> adaptations have always appealed to me. When I realized the two could be combined, the ideas came easily. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Elise: What was the hardest part of writing it?<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.:<\/strong> Balance in this story was a struggle in a few areas. I needed to firmly establish Rosabella and her world before Leandro while also having them meet as s<\/span>oon as possible. Also, the original is one of the longest fairy tales ever, so adapting it into a short story without crowding it or leaving it incomplete was tricky.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: What short stories have you written for a JL Anthology before?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>I wrote \u201cHer Dearest Treasure\u201d for the very first JLA, based on the \u201cThe Peasant\u2019s Clever Daughter\u201d by the Brothers Grimm.<\/p>\n

Elise: How did this experience differ from your previous JLA story?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>\u201cHer Dearest Treasure\u201d was based on an obscure tale, so I tried to keep most of the story inta<\/span>ct. I replaced each character and the details of each plot point, but the general outline was unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing Through Him\u201d is based on one of the most frequently adapted tales, so I wanted to really update it and change things more. Instead of following the plot beat-for-beat, I looked at its basic theme and twisted that. By changing it from an allegory for arranged marriage to one about modern dating, large portions changed radically.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: What other fairy tale would you like to rewrite?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>I have an adaptation of \u201cKing Thrushbeard\u201d in the works right now, and I have ideas for \u201cCinderella\u201d, \u201cThe Frog Prince\u201d, and a mash-up of \u201cSnow White\u201d and \u201cIron Hans\u201d. A surprisingly small percentage of fairy tales adapt well into romances, but I\u2019d love to adapt most of the ones that do.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise:\u00a0 W<\/em><\/strong>ow, so if our readers enjoy retellings, they should keep an eye on you! Do you prefer a HEA? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B<\/em>.C.: <\/strong>I write romance. I live for HEA!<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: How do you combat writer\u2019s block?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>Deadlines. If something can be finished whenever, I\u2019ll procrastinate with research and worldbuilding. The pressure of knowing something needs to be worked on fuels my imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: Are you a \u201cpantser\u201d or \u201cplotter\u201d?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>I mainly plot. \u201cSeeing Through Him\u201d was tightly planned in detail before I wrote anything. However, for longer works, I will sometimes let myself follow ideas mid-story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: Favorite original fairy tale?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>\u201cThe Peasant\u2019s Clever Daughter\u201d is underappreciated and has my favorite ending.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise:\u00a0Funnily enough, that was always one of my favorites too – I had a version of it in a book as a child. What’s your favorite adapted fairy tale?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>Disney\u2019s <\/span>Beauty and the Beast <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Tangled<\/span><\/i> are two of my favorite movies, but as an adaptation, I\u2019d go with <\/span>Ella Enchanted <\/span><\/i>by Gail Carson Levine (not the movie, though!). The <\/span>Tin Man<\/span><\/i> miniseries deserves a mention as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: If you could meet one author, alive or dead, who would it be? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>C.S. Lewis was such a master of both storytelling and the English language, and based on his letters, he seems like he would have been fun to hang with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise:\u00a0Ah, I’d love to meet him as well. What is your non-writer alter-ego (aka day job)?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>I\u2019m a hairstylist, though I\u2019m raising my sons full-time now that I have two. <\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: What is your spirit animal?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>Umm…a Muppet? Is that a valid answer? *shrugs* I\u2019m going with Muppet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise:\u00a0Sure – why not! Who is the biggest supporter of your writing?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>My mom told me to be a writer <\/span>years<\/span><\/i> ago, and my husband is always the first one to read my stories and give me feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: What is the biggest obstacle to your writing?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>I\u2019m easily distracted. I could probably use some blinders to go with my headphones when I\u2019m\u2014ooh, what\u2019s that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Elise: What other projects are you working on?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

B.C.: <\/strong>Besides my \u201cKing Thrushbeard\u201d retelling, I have another short story called \u201cI Loved You Tomorrow\u201d and my first novel <\/span>A Seer\u2019s Daughter,<\/span><\/i> that I\u2019m working to publish this year.<\/span><\/p>\n
